History of the Follansbee Fire Department

Follansbee Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1906.   At the time it had only one truck kept in a one bay firehouse at the city building on Penn St.

The alerting system was a bell which hung in a bell tower above the firehouse.  In 1906 the departments only specialties were fire suppression and fire rescue.

Today the department has expanded its fleet to two engines, one heavy rescue, one ladder, one mini pumper and a squad.  Our alerting system is a uhf  paging system.

Specialties today consist of fire suppression,  vehicle rescue, high angle rescue, confined space rescue, industrial rescue, structural rescue, trench rescue equipped and Medical First Responder.

The fire department is now located at the intersection of Route 2 and Allegheny Street. We currently have 30+ members 16 active members and stationed in a four bay firehouse with a county EMS station in the basement.

Included in our fire district are a total of five heavy industrial complexes,  several residential institutions, commercial buildings  and  multiple residential dwellings.

Included in our heavy rescue territory are two major highways, several high traffic areas and four large bridges, 1 railway and 3 auto, spanning the Ohio River.

Credit is given to the members of our department for gathering up this info.
